I must say it is interesting to note that to find so many enthusiastic reviews of this immaculate GPS. I’m always skeptical about what seems too good! I have read many comments online, and after analyzing the technical data and functions that have chosen to buy Delorme PN-40. Before this purchase, I have a Garmin 60CSx. I believe that Delorme was ready to be a significant improvement in both the ability to monitor and display air layering.
Let me note that I do not think GPS is an ideal except for the perception of users and their application to start. If it meets your criteria, then it serves the purpose! That being said, I’ll try to summarize my personal observations from my point of view.
After purchasing the Delorme PN-40, I quickly signed for $ 29. 99 years to use the download service to use this feature impressive. I downloaded a dozen tickets for this post and I must say is that Delorme very effective to minimize the number of cards that can be downloaded. First, the size of maps you can download for each type of card (color aerial, USGS, etc..) Is limited to a certain size in sq. km. This is not a problem too because they are generally large enough for my hike. Secondly, I noticed that the speed of download speeds of around only 15-20kb / s. This is incredibly slow, taking into account the capacity of the cable in more than 700Kb / s. A typical download time for the maximum 250sq/km file is: 1 5h. In addition, many prematurely stop the downloads, which requires you to re-download the entire file (a download manager is unable to resume the download at the end). I tried for days, a single file download advance (and not for downloading my modem and router are not the cause!)
The curve learning to download files on the card -40 PN is difficult and not very well documented. It took me (I’m an electrical engineer) about 4 hours to scan the documentation and some trial and error. Once the download is complete, I think it was a welcome display cards, if it lacked details.
Can I have the Delorme PN-40 and Garmin 60CSx (Sirf Star III chipset) on an increase of 9-mile to Forest Park in Portland, Oregon. I used new batteries in both Powerex Medion GPS. The outside temperature was about 35degF and march lasted approximately 5 hours. My results are:
the Delorme PN-40 took several minutes longer than the Garmin 60CSx be on the satellite before a 3D view of the lock was . Delorme circle of uncertainty, the location accuracy varies considerably hampered by standing in one place in the open without a view of the sky. The alternative would be the order of + – up to 15 ft 40 ft +. The Garmin locked onto the signal varies consistently in the same place, with variations of only + 2 feet. I have the Delorme aerial on the screen to be difficult to see without the backlight. isobaric lines that are not easily separated from the briefing note of the air. It may be just me, but I’m not color blind and have a good vision. The Garmin display is easier to see, I think, because there is not much clutter on the screen (backlight helps a lot, even in low light). The lines followed Delorme are superb! It is easy to see where you went and color contrasts nicely to see the background. The action items Garmin are almost impossible to see (to download onto your PC), as in the mix topo map! The last point I want, for the life of the battery, which has been the biggest problem for my personal use. The battery life was barely acceptable Delorme (for my needs) under the terms of this hike (cold and wet for 5 hours). The battery indicator started to fall on the 2nd Delorme after about 5 hours and was continued for the rest of the hike. The last hour of the hike I thought that Delorme cut, but I keep the batteries from the hike in a full year. The battery life Garmin remained in its entirety for the whole ride. We can say that my experiment is not only fair, as the batteries are not new and do not know how many times I used the backlight, but I did not, indicating the consumption of energy to begin Delorme reduced. A sample unit is not only a great display of all units sold, but I’m not engaged by a person or try to take advantage! Of course, you have to p-makers for your application.
I would say that I think the feeling that my head on the Garmin and the equipment in the head Delorme mapping software. I would like to create a product of the merger of two companies to see the advantage of their strengths. Good luck in your buying decision.
Note that I am not an employee of two companies and have no bias against them. I am also products of both companies!

I received my new GPSr DeLorme PN-40 the other day.
First, let me explain that my previous GPSr was a basic eTrex. It has been quite low, but you helped me find many caches. Well, keep in mind two weeks ago, I did not intend to get a Delorme. I was pretty set on getting the Garmin Oregon and had only an inkling of the AP-XX. So I went to forums and posted some questions Delorme. The level of attention I received from members and staff of the DeLorme really impressed me. Combined with an employee DeLorme blog post, which seemed almost a direct response to my questions about the Mac support, and I was sold. I am willing to wait one month limited Mac support, and we know they are working to provide more support on the road.
So, my first impressions. It can not say the bells and whistles of Oregon aesthetic (I mean large touch screen, buttons missing), but it rocks. I really have nothing to compare it to other than the eTrex, but quickly, quickly, quickly! I heard the PN-20 has taken some time to make maps and itineraries. These cards made in real time while I was driving. It took only seconds to calculate a route. Really amazing. In addition, it took a few minutes from a cold start to a 3-D acquire fixed, but if it once, restart, after all, as an almost instant fix. Literally, I turned to her and received an update.
The instructions were very specific, the buzzer was for me to know enough to turn. If the kit I travel, I have always been in the dark, the backlight, and have no problem, my way to other addresses. Speaking of addresses, the cards are coming to this great! So easy, the area of pre-cut cards to invite people on the accompanying DVD. I have not tried to cut the cards online, but I caught a plane set of satellite images, because it is one of the main points that I sold on the PN-40.
Well, the main reason I wanted a new GPSr, Geocaching. The eTrex reached its goal, but sometimes I’d be a place for more than an hour of walking around with jumping GPSr. With the PN-40, they are entitled to get the cache. I read the note, so I thought I knew where he was. The GPSr that I revealed only 2 meters from where I thought it was! Unfortunately, I could not find first, I think me and finally I found a few meters from where I look first. I watch the FN-40, and of course there was the record 0 feet. Maybe it was beginner’s luck, but I was impressed.
I’m just thrilled. This was the greatest experience I ever had geocaching. I uploaded pictures of my color aerial PN, and it was literally as if I had, like Google Earth GPSr. I saw all my caches on the map scrolls that I wanted to meet, and beat him. He was so precise, it was scary! I was in dense foliage at a time and he never lost a connection 3-D. It was not jump around like my GPS a. This has been constant! In fact, I think the biggest problem is that the people who placed the caches had a GPS less accurate, then release the coords was easy.
The PN Auto-Routing for roads each cache. As soon as I did on the field, I just sometimes the GPS lead me to the cache. Some of the caches I have not read, I went to the area and found it.
I am already very pleased with. It’s a big change in my Etrex. My biggest concern was that I regret and buyers want, I bought in Oregon. So far, this is not the case. Once I load all kinds of different cards that come with the GPSr (and for $ 29. 99 Start, I get a year subscription of unlimited downloads to their online maps of the card), I do not see how Oregon can even compare.
I could not happier with my purchase of this treasure! I am really surprised to see how the PN does it all! I can not wait for the next firmware update for the advanced features of geocaching. The PN-40 can only get better.
BTW, 7 of 8 caches today, and those who could not find I was definitely over.
DeLorme Great job!

I had the chance to try the PN-40 many recent articles on a desert backcountry. The device is made correctly, and although I features very difficult, at the end of the week, I’m still not on a wish list.
Delorme, the new high-resolution color aerial Imaging is an actual upgrade of its former Topo and Satellite “imagery. If you compare side by side with Google Earth, Google has a slight advantage over the resolution, but it is quite narrow. And for a mobile GPS, the resolution is more than necessary, and you can zoom in on details that give sufficient details. Delorme new quantities subscription option of $ 30 worth a year of unlimited download card is a much better pricing model than the old “pay as you go, the more expensive, it was clear.
The PN-40 is fast in both the acquisition and re-drawing GPS map. The GPS track also, while in the pocket. It acquires an update after the passage often within 30 seconds. The map draws again, not smooth and silky, if you still on the East “in position” as he constantly strives to adapt to your different direction. But in “North Up” and “natural” mode where the map is static and your arrow is moving, the camera is very easy to use. And zooming in and out almost instantly, which is much faster than previous models with a handheld GPS, high resolution aerial maps.
planning with points of interest and routes from the included Topo software is an easy way to plan walks, although you can also get points on the small screen on the device if you do not have a computer nearby. It is a slow process as you complete the four-way button, not just use too nagivate.
The device is robust, with high impact resistance plastic hard outside and a battery case, the screws firmly with thumb screws to make it waterproof.
The device is easy to use, but it has a number of layers of complexity if you do not want. It took me several days of intensive use long before I knew I felt all the menu options. There are many ways to the device, which is probably why I do not feel well I would settle at the end of the hike.
Although you can use for self-routing, I found my regular automatic GPS much easier to use. But for everything outside the lines, such as hiking or driving a jeep, this device is really great.
Here are some tips that I learned to use:
1) Sometimes the camera from my computer be detected when I first hook the USB cable and the device. For some reason when I turn, as the device, wait a bit, then again, the computer recognizes the second attempt.
2) Do not be afraid to turn the screen brightness to full brightness. It is much easier to see in the day, and since the device uses two AA batteries, not a problem if you need to change. I found only two AA batteries lasted a day and a half removed switches set at full intensity with the display automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity.
3) I screen with my car keys in the same pocket, so watch the screen and sharp or metal objects.
Portable GPS high resolution finally become reality. I really enjoyed my walk, able to plan complex routes in advance and see exactly where I was when in the backcountry or on trails. I was able to make intelligent decisions on, if it was late and I needed to know in new ways. It took years to achieve my dream of a GPS device with high-resolution maps at the end. I recommend the PG-40.

If the reason you are considering the PN-40, because you’ll meet friends, have, and they call your cell to tell you that this restaurant and others is the address of the site. . . and you want to type in your GPS when you’re stopped at a traffic light and you have the drive, well, you do not read – this is not for you. The PN-40 is not, at least not if you load your PC in the car with the Topo 7 software on them. On the other hand, if you use a GPS research, once you leave the car, that’s all.
I was about one (buy cheaper) Garmin Vista HCx, but one of the pn-40. I am a big fan of Delorme atlases for many years and I decided my business to them. Here’s why I’m glad
1) There is a vast library of satellite images and aerial photographs, and more available for download (you’ll be paying for the cost of $ 30 per year ‘s get used to it) – it is really with something like Google Earth on a handheld GPS. If you go hiking, and you want Arial photography on the location of your foot, you just download and copy it to the PN-40. You can load a variety of types of maps on the GPS and select what you are looking at as and
2) The PN-40 features onboard memory and an SD card and there is /> ;
4) despite what I said above, the PN-40 comes with a * very good on board roadmaps USA. If the vision of waypoints for the locations you want to go home, you can put the GPS to give you a route where you are, have to create your waypoints.
< , br /> In terms of topo-7 Software: The package comes with an offer for an upgrade to the latest version obtained within 6 months of purchase (there $ 10). I take this offer and we hope that Delorme makes some improvements.
The reason I almost did not buy the pn-40 because I walk regularly in the United States South America and Asia and I told him sunspots DeLorme asked their international support, and gave honest, they did not expect something special. In other words, they have fundamental international relations (the boundaries and main roads), that sounded a little thin, but I could not find evidence that Garmin and Magellan had something much better.

although we will consider this thing. N) Forums == (10/10) I have problems with it. everybody how to do business with each product. Delorme forums unbelievable I got many responses within minutes of posting a problem or question. Delorme and in fact a group of beta test which you are applying to be able to test their new products.
the PN-40 is a bad mammajamma Delorme. but not in a “Why did I miss this bundle of banknotes Thus, more of a” I can not believe what I can do it this way.
Let me preface this review with the words, my most important application of this device is geocaching. (Although his case orange, it is extremely difficult to act like I was on my phone look at a map when Muggles – Do not speak Folk geocache – round) did. That said – I’ve used both Garmin and Delorme for geocaching and the feeling that I have a good idea of the capabilities lost two.
I used / a Garmin E-Trex Venture, nüvi 200, Colorado 300 and use a Delorme PN-40.
I’ll start with the company if it after the screen size and poor terrible zoom function – Upgrading to Colorado 300th i paired with my Nuvi 200 (it is easier on themselves – buying a car GPS, you get in the cache, then use a handheld Narrow your search by foot), and after reading the comments and data PN40 website – I came in one month to PN40 to buy from Amazon.
– you can read my messages to the company in the Colorado vs. Colorado br 300 pages of information on amazon – now concentrate on the important things. I do base with bits of details.
, A) Battery == (4 / 10) God buy batteries. So you’ll be able to reduce battery consumption on this unit must be immediately blocked by a GPS, if you’re not looking something off the “Route” function, or down the backlight. a good pair of AA batteries will keep you more than an hour in this area and they are lithium-ion battery, my friends , none of those pieces of scrap alkaline. Buy rechargeable batteries and spare themselves the trouble with the last bit of juice for a supermarket nearby which sells research.
B) acquisition of the satellite = = (5 / 10) I say this because he is nervous. Boots are guaranteed almost cold you 3 minutes to present a reasonably good satellite lock. warm boots are a little faster, about a minute, a minute and a half wait. iRaster but “” this device is amazing, and Garmin does not compete with it. (IRaster is the device’s ability to really focus / Caches / physical characteristics of the region in the direction corresponding to your physical location – so if you walk north along the Atlantic coast and then suddenly to south – the screen turns white and even the sea is displayed almost immediately on the left side of the screen.)
C) == Compass (7 / 10) Garmin Sorry, we can not win easily. Garmin has the equipment to be maintained at, while the PN40 can be maintained at an angle, vertical, horizontal – any way you want and there is still a very good book.
D) == display (6 / 10) Yes, Colorado, which has a larger screen compared PN40 this seems less of a workhorse. But what it lacks in screen size allows for sustainability. Although you can buy a screen protector for most outdoor stores, I do not have the original to remove the device when I removed the box around 4 months and it still works well. The screen size is big enough to play right away instead of one foot and can be viewed even in bright sunlight. (Backlight function is changed) /> e) == Durability (9 / 10), that’s life in that part of geocaching. cope – When You’re geocaching or hiking is not always have both hands on your GPS device. PN40 is incredible. I collapsed on the concrete, grass, wood, bricks and tiles, and it has barely a scratch on it. Yes, there are small scratches on the rubber coating back, but you know, I have taken more than 70 cache hunting in the deep forests, coastal areas and land covered with sand you see different geocache hunts . and it continues to run. oh yes – it is waterproof. yeah. not resist. I mean, it’s waterproof. Drop of this device in a stream, and you have the time to have to laugh, tell your friends, and then decide if you want to wear gloves before reaching for him. do not believe me? online, go to YouTube and search for water testing Delorme PN40. Most of the videos you have shown by developers Delorme camping and hiking and they are set by their own tests. yeah. Delorme did not know was what kind of company is that you? Contrary to Garmin, to different teams – has done this test we
Delorme F) == Design (8 / 10) I have heard people talk like they can not use this device with gloves, or the keys are too small. For me, it’s ridiculous. The buttons are bulbish, raised and have a “click” (not digital – click even if the power is off) and separated enough that you know exactly where you press the button. All are fairly obvious with descriptions of their functions distributed. MENU = access to the examination of different aspects, ENTER Entry, QUIT or PAGE = program abort = Windows Modified field cycle, IN / OUT = Zoom In / Out card and the cycle top or bottom of a list, research Lupe = (by address, button Power Point or some interista POI, city, attraction, etc. ..) = to activate / deactivate and change the backlight function, Pin = select a location on the map. . . . The housing is made of durable plastic with rubber trim, the buttons are made of rubber, the battery is SD card slot and is on two screws, which can change with the flip-up-regulation to be held .
G) == memory Some models are equipped with 1 GB of onboard memory, few have 8GB of luxury, but do not be put off any small number, like 512 MB or 1 GB Most SDHC (High Capacity) cards can be purchased for a very low cost – Target has a 4GB for about $ 16, an 8 GB for about $ 30. The PN-40 supports up to 32G SDHC card. In addition, most Garmin, you can only up to 500 points per track, the standard Delorme 10,000 points. If you are important in hiking – it will track points. You can update the “Back On Track” open “function, your last record and returns you to your point of origin. Data from your memory function trasnfer will be quicker if you specify transfer cards directly to the map SD in the camera (also the Delorme)
H) == Maps do yourself a favor, buy the 29th annual subscription card 95. This gives you unlimited downloads of any MAPS Delorme. cool thing about their plans – if you’ve used Google Maps – you’ll be at home. You can actually download aerial color photos (some cities have high resolution) and overlay roads, waypoints, caches and interests / s POI ontop “of color imaging. It is a tremendous aid in urban geocaching.
I) == Support (10/10), if there is no reason to give a Garmin, it is to support the customer. I had to call twice Delorme – and each time I wanted to talk to the supervisor to praise my representative customer service. They are incredible. For questions my technical – are in fact people who developed the PN40, without formation of part-time employees who do not know more answers, which the developers would simply send an e-mail inches, more recently, Company TOPO8 (topography Software released) and I lost my AnnualMapKey to download unlimited tickets to me for a year. I had to call my callback MapKey, after I lost my job and this is my e-mail in one hour by a superior officer sent without problems – just for my info credit card originally used to verify the purchase – no questions asked).
J) == Software (6 / 10) the only reason why I am presenting is a middle ranking because it is not really intuitive to use software. This is not something to find out what you can in 25 minutes, this software is something that you have to study the clues to tutorials, forums or user. Once you understand – this is not so bad. all the cards you want to download, you have to be applied for from Delorme server. Basically, the work that way. map areas show that you want to argue that “order” server Delorme expected, the maps are downloaded (usually established within 5 minutes) for download (in depending on what type of card – black and white, color, air, Topo, hi-resolution, which can take anywhere to save 5 to 45 minutes, and rename, send your GPS. you can place an order for a quantity of the network card and transferred to a certain size for your display device at a time.
K) unit operating == (4 / 10) I’d say it higher if it is not so simple. There is not superfluous. It is a basic operating system and a number of windows to navigate through. Unlike the Garmin Colorado 300 , which look very nice operations Vista, the system sees as PN40 PC DOS 1990 Original start of a screen. I will not lie, it’s not pretty. But this is not a GPS looking for some people —- The PN40 is managed by professionals in the parks department, a city service with state and commercial companies are used. People like us geocachers are published only in the operation, according to the geocaching tool Delorme and managed to geocaching. COM to release a plug-in that sends geocaches directly to the device.
L) paperless cache = (10 / 10) ok so it’s not really a strong point of most – but Geocacher impressive. This is the greatest thing. Contrary to the basic GPS units – the paperless caching allows you to “save “the site of a treasure hunt on the PN-40 and access while you’re away from your computer. can not find the cache? Look at the cached page on PN40 and read the comments of the person Users do not – they contain a reference, and now you can use to find them. Or read comments from people who are found them / don ‘t see and do, help you have to beat him. C’ is such an amazing property. Some devices have this function, and the Garmin Colorado 300 is considered good, and it’s worth the extra money, if both devices are on your mind.
M) WAAS, and 32-channel chipset
, O) I actually bought in April this year Topo 8 was published in June or July — software that costs $ 100th Delorme has a policy that if you shared one device or software and a new version of this software in the year of purchase – they will fix yours for free. I called, explained the situation and for the price of shipping and packing I have a BRAND NEW TOPO8. seriously. It This is a company that cares and wants to keep your business.
So after all this a good basic summary?
Benefits == maps Zoom battery life capacity, durability, sensitivity, support, caching paperless
== Cons Topo software, slow satellite measurement of time />
; Overall, I would not go back to Garmin Garmin, if I called in to say they wanted to make me a free unit.
I do not work for one of these two companies but if I did, I ask, first Delorme, and I have not been compensated for each.
I hope this has helped, if
Geocaching is delayed —– it does not – just freaking get and enjoy it!
;
I have found so far, more than 100 caches hidden within n Do not forget to scream!, and more than half of them because of this unit, so it is!
