This is my first GPS geocaching. The high sensitivity chip has the same strong performance, and therefore the signal sensitivity and spatial resolution, as one of the more expensive machines. This is an excellent precision in areas where GPS renounce my former forest too dense. The software that drives the device is the same as the old model yellow (see below) and has withstood the test of time.
If you point to point navigation (Geocaching, leaves marks or easy to find your way to the car or the ski lodge), then this device is concerned, much work for a price “no regrets” will do. If you are looking for car navigation, so it is not for you.
Be aware that this is the “H” for “high sensitivity” unit, which was introduced in 2007. Its appearance is almost identical to older units Etrex yellow, unlike “high sensitivity” in red letters above the screen. Although the units over to do work and can still be found, its value is reduced significantly by the availability of this device. It’s one thing to keep in mind when using or “new old stock” units in other locations.
One thing that other reviews mentioned True – just out of the box it takes a long time (hours) to acquire Almanac (a numerical description of where the satellites in the sky, which is transmitted periodically) and then there are the satellite signals. Mine had at least 3 hours and had believed it was broken until he despaired locked in. Not that this is a thing once – once reached, starting time is approximately 5 seconds.

As an avid Geocacher and teacher, I had to figure out what was all the buzz on models H. (I have a dozen regular clients, which I use for teaching) is all the same functions, except that it should be able to receive signals from the heavy forest cover or in areas with steep walls ( such as buildings) or in valleys, etc. When I used it for the first time it took forever until the first satellite, even if I reset the time zone beginning immediately. To do this, make sure to change that with a central time zone. It lost power and start trying to stop. It has always been very frustrating. Took about 15 minutes. However, if even in a position, the SAT was to find local it worked well. If you have not in dense forests and valleys Yest tried, but always a good sign at Forest Forest Park regularly and it gave me an accuracy of less than 20 meters. The price is the same as the standard E-Trex 100, but you get a better reception. The disadvantage is that you lose 5 hours of battery life (17 vs. 22). I do not see this as a problem. And there is no cool globe logo on the front. I will eventually buy more.
Posted 8/6/09 – Okay. It has become my standard GPSr, but I do not recommend for new cachers. I was less than 5 feet of accuracy in the worst conditions. Although I still love is the greatest disadvantage that need to download a serial interface. Most computers have more meaning that you need an adapter cable. . additional $ 35. . If you find one. For GCing basis, I now propose the risk Garmin. Even the basic operation, but uses a standard USB port.

I wanted a simple, easy to use GPS, allow me to wander in the desert and easy to find my way to and from various locations without getting lost is to be feared, and always find my way to my campsite or car . I also have, I visited the sites and locations on the map, not Topo I visited, but wanted to save the sent to the GPS. I also wanted to read “to take the field” and be able to see the location on a map. This unit is all that perfection. Contrary to the experience of other auditors, the eTrex H side when I turned it initializes the GPS satellite to her and my position in a matter of minutes. The description of this unit should mention right away that you can use it to save places you are not present. She done by reference to geocaching, but some people who do not know what it’s like me. And the description of how he could do in the manual a bit better. I’m not very experienced in the use of GPS with topo map and I remember that the GPS to date “on the card with which I work was to be used in the program following my reading of hundreds of meters. My biggest complaint about this book is that, if the GPS tells you how to program different standard to say he is not the beginning “if you live in 48 states, the states of a card that “NAD 27″ for the date you select “NAD 27 CONUS (for Continental U.S.). I had to buy some books on GPS, to find out. Otherwise, the manual instruction, then it is just a little, is quite comprehensive and easy to use. If your needs are simple, like mine, and you do not have topo maps loaded into the GPS, is a good choice a reasonable price. (Even with a GPS it is always advisable to unknown areas of wilderness with a map and compass work. If you work with a card, you are probably the UTM system you must learn to work with it and obtain a scale plastic meter reading, “Grid”. A good book on the GPS can be useful in this regard – the manual does not go into details.)

I was looking for a basic GPS device to take with me when I solo backpack. . . I can find my car, and some points of interest on the road (like, oh, say, where our camp before the start of a dayhike.
.< Br />
are more expensive than most GPS devices do there. I love technology in all parts of my life, but to simplify the reason I like backpack. The last thing I wanted was a complex GPS, the purchase and loading of topographic maps for the purchase of my computer. . . and all the headaches and the difficulties. (Read the comments on the more expensive and more complex models of GPS.)
I have this on my eTrex with a backpack trip of several days in southern PA. I literally had the eTrex evening of the day to go before I wanted. I turned, saw a few videos online, and was off and running. (I even made copies of certain pages of the manual to take with me, but found that the camera is very easy to use that I do not need.)
; I gave it four stars because the manual is written very badly. This is my first GPS unit and a discussion of the foundations would have been useful. But with the help of some videos on Youtube and other places online I could get up and running fairly quickly.
Like other reviewers, I took my eTrex for a few minutes from the satellites, when I asked for the first time to find at home. The other new users might want to know is that if you drive for several hours before turning the unit () as I did, the eTrex to find a few minutes “again. Not much, but good to know .
Conclusion: If you want a simple GPS for hiking, hunting or fly fishing, then the camera is to obtain.

I certainly had problems with my original eTrex-H. First operation could not see a satellite signal waterways, not 6 times. I went to climb on my roof, in order, still no signal waterways. He finally acknowledges a signal waterways into my house, my office (go figure), while I for the software version of Garmin Online client was looking for support.
In two short walks, less than 4 hours, closed my original eTrex-H is a certain point during the hike. The back “feature is obviously worthless.
The Garmin Web site is less friendly, particularly for customer support. Garmin online Windows open to maximize by-products from Amazon links to navigate or no choice. And, Garmin has not responded to my online mail for customer support. I would rather see it as a website (Webmaster) problem.
Does the Finally, I am connected with the support of Garmin products. eTrex H I returned to the warranty period. It costs $ 13 more from me. get 00 + for shipping, and a few weeks to repair the approval Garmin . finally replaced my Garmin eTrex H, without explanation, what is wrong with the original eTrex-H.
I have not tested my last eTrex H on the runway, but there no difficulty in acquiring a signal to waterways The first installation took place. (Gp)
