Before buying this new Venture HC, I spent many hours hiking with some of the original eTrex models over the years. I think it is fair to say that the concept of the original eTrex was great, the execution was often disappointing.
not disappointed. The eTrex Venture HC is perfect. He recovered almost all the damage that has ravaged the original models. The new high sensitivity receiver is amazingly effective. Countless times I stayed in my old eTrex widths curse, because it can not acquire a single satellite. Last night I had the Venture HC shot in the lower floor of two floors of my house and locked onto 8 satellites. . . through the roof and the floor! No more “need a clear vision of heaven on the left.
Amazing.
The monochrome display has the old color and the interface is now much more intuitive, like you even more features. The cable, the serial number has been on previous models, upgraded to USB, another welcome improvement. The case is somewhat broader than before, but the design resembles the eTrex original.
A card is included, but it is just that – basic. It shows major highways, waterways, and has demonstrated some limited ability to the output of services. If you turn-by-turn directions, street, one is not for you eTrex. It is a true outdoor heritage of Garmin GPS.
Battery (14 hours) at the bottom of the palette, when the existing eTrex promised by comparison, but it is still perfectly adequate and did not reveal any problems.
A weakness that remains is a PC software Garmin Waypoint Manager. He published the feel and functionality of software around 1994th Garmin could certainly be a better PC interface. For $ 49 you can buy or download the ExpertGPS Topografix free version (EasyGPS) from their website. Be more functional than the Garmin OEM.
Despite these criticisms, the software is a quibble. The HC risk itself is large. It is a constantly changing market product eTrex all previous (and many competitors) makes it unnecessary. /> Finally an affordable GPS outdoor that I can recommend without reservation. ” , br

I was totally off on the Magellan eXplorist 100 Chessed when my died under warranty and they refused to support or repair it (which was a new unit!). So I’m just like Garmin, based on the sympathy of my car unit.
Mac users:
It’s a bit complicated, but I am capable, USB cable and use the “Garmin” to automatically load waypoints send geocaching. com. A warning is that they have a Mac firmware update website and it is very new and froze on my attempt to use it, what is hidden my camera />. [... ]. I have the update for this device to a PC friends, and it went well.
There are some Mac software cache, but none of them are working for me with this device. So keep in mind if you really want to go on the waypoint web downloads. What a shit, because Maccaching GeoJournal and how it would be great.
The software provided does not work on a Mac for work, do not take into account so that CD. On the Garmin website for the plugin for Safari Mac you know the device you can do to send ‘ Trick Garmin. You also have the Mac version of their WebUpdater (who sprayed my first unit) on its website. Finally, you do not have any USB drivers for OSX Tiger or Leopard, take care not just a question for Windows to quickly switch the Garmin website.
Use:
Crazy and acquisition of satellites. We are very pleased that we immediately turn to enter in the car and began to satellites. Our Magellin (100 low cost units) would take some time out of cloud cover.
It also seems to save everything time that the closure is very fast and not “rescue” in knowledge of how our Magellin us waiting.
I guess our only complaint is that we, the retro -Lighting that tries to use a lot and sucks batteries. It’s winter now, so many days and locations are dark and without the backlight, the device can play low enough. It takes 2 AA. It also has a system pref for the type of battery you use (Alkaline, NiMH, or the lion), why? Maybe if they are to support USB NiMH? But do you take to ensure that the correct type.
We love the coordinates are automatically loaded. And even with the free account on geocaching. com, we get the cache name, GC # and coordinated. This saves time and errors. We are loading all the cache, which seems interested only in the case.
Accuracy:
unity over right. Our other device usually rather just 20-30 feet in the forest, and it led us right to the cache memory and 16 ‘in detail at this stage of the forest cover normal. It refreshes more often than our old unit, so it feels more responsive. No walk more than 20 feet, then to see that the arrow has just not updated to show that we in the wrong direction, or mouth.
;
Build:
; It seems solid and took our last rainy hike well. The back has a bit empty, but the seal must be locked in order. It uses the ” D “lock, so only a half turn to lock and unlock, which is fast and appreciated on a cold cache when changing batteries. We have always had to dig out of the ring and Magellin turned back to pop.
Thumb switch:
If you used the old button with input from Garmin, the rocker on the front is really really welcome. We zip through the data entry and press the button to accept an entry. It is also pass a link to mark your current location (holding down the button). Another thing is that now down the left button below the “Search” menu opens soon.
Speed:
One thing I it was pointed out that when I don ‘were a part more “detail” for the cards, he has really cut hope redraw speed (which is a bit slow to start), so that was disappointing.
someone happy and caching allows

I have this unit after much research on different brands and, after stopping at Garmin models. It is a great all around GPS cheaply. This is my first, so I can not access the increased sensitivity of HC-smart comment, but I get much more coverage in my house, and when I go out of precision to about 9 ‘. I like the compass and the altimeter of Vista, but it would not really need much for them, not because I am an avid hiker and did not need to spend extra money.
The Venture HC is ideal for geocaching. I took my family on our first game last weekend, and although we have only about an hour, we had a great time to find caches in a nearby park. I do like a fun family road trips and seeing. The company has integrated functions that allow geocaching waypoints directly from geocachers. com (with the free Garmin browser plugin) and even found a trademark right on the GPS cache. The color screen is very readable in bright sunlight. Although the risk is real HC no compass, the “compass” page is very useful for closing on the target system.
The Venture HC is also ideal for amateur astronomers. My computerized telescope has lat / long / time to accurately track and death to know objects in the sky. I can address the standard addresses on Geocoder. us, but if I want to put in place in a dark place, somewhere, a GPS is a must. Instead of getting paid $ 200 for the GPS option on my set, I get this GPS to do everything and just plug the numbers into the telescope controller, or even connect to my laptop. Although any GPS gives you the date and place, not everyone has such a beautiful backlit display like that, a good thing if you’re not there in the dark. The customizable color schemes (with automatic night mode) and the varying intensity of the lighting are also ideal for astronomy to keep stray light to a minimum.
If I am disappointed that something with the built-in basemap. Again, this is my first GPS, I was somehow expected more details, not necessarily in the form of street names, but certainly in terms of channels, mountains, and large blocks, etc. The I could only distinguish roads, lakes and cities. There are many hills where I live and none of them are displayed on the map. More detailed topo maps are available but may cost $ 80 – $ 120 I do not subtract stars for this, because I make sure that all base maps are almost the same thing. And with 24 MB of memory, there is room for a decent quality maps.
Garmin updated the firmware of the company in February 2008, then one of the first things I did was download their free utility to automatically install WebUpdater updates. I had a moment of shock, as my GPS lost the USB connection in the middle of the process, and I feared that my unit would be disabled. But after turning off and on again, he came right away and after a second attempt, the new firmware has been installed in about 5 minutes.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the quality of this unit. It feels solid and light weight, fitted with a rubber Nice feel to it. It is also waterproof, so no problem using the rain. The interface is a little practice, but after a while it becomes kind of a second. The company will allow you to virtually every image individually according to your taste, for example, I wanted to have the time, altitude and location on the same side for purposes of astronomy, so I set the one screen to show all these areas. At $ 130, the price level was perfect: significantly lower than the next model of sacrifice (only the compass / altimeter, microSD card slot), and not much more than plain vanilla units in black and white without geocaching features.
I recommend it.

I wanted a GPS primarily for hunting and used the Garmin with good success in the past. This model, provided that all the features I was looking forever. I have never had again lost to hunting in the deep forest. The device works equally well in a pocket or in the truck, which was not the case with previous GPS devices I’ve used. I recently started with my GPS when running mileage and speed to length. The onboard computer is the length, maximum speed, average speed, spent some time moving and time stopped. If you have data every time it is still a very useful tool reset.

I was very happy with the purchase of my new eTrex Venture HC satisfied. I have a Garmin Cx Legeng geocaching for the last year and used to skip coords under cover very heavy. This is not the case with the new eTrex Venture HC. I was also able to load Topo and City maps without problems with my old software. I had no problems loading waypoints directly with GSAK software.
