I bought the Meridian Platinum and the Garmin Vista technology to compare. They are both great units with similar prices and features. I tested the next level: Meridian Gold and the Garmin Legend with similar results. My point of view: If
small size and high resolution are important to you, you can buy the Garmin.
If you have a bigger screen, more buttons, a floating device, or something that can be accessed armslength beyond a desire to be removed, use the Magellan. If you’re reading glasses, avoid the Garmin.
Here is a list of specific comments:
– Size: Garmin fits easily in a shirt pocket. Magellan is the volume of 114% or more is preferable for a large belly pocket or jacket pocket adapted.
– Weight: Magellan is 51% more.
– Display: Magellan is 66% larger, visible over a length of dependence. Garmin will not be displayed beyond arm’s length.
– Pixels: Garmin has over twice as many pixels.
– Resolution: With the small screen and the number of pixels screen resolution Garmin about four times higher.
– Both are waterproof. Magellan floats. . . Garmin does not work.
– Reception: Magellan had received a little better, probably because of the greater internal antenna.
– screen protector: Magellan has raised a frame around the screen to avoid scratches, but it also collects a lot of dust on the screen accordingly.
– Maps / waypoints: Low resolution for the Magellan made small card offers difficult to discern. Garmin much easier to read, with a variety of highly detailed map symbols / icons.
– Features: same for both, but Magellan had a few extras I liked: audible warnings of a wheel “navigation screen with points of interest in the” distance “speedometer” view “with the dial, the sun and Moon seems certain location on the dial of the compass.
– Buttons / knobs: Garmin’s buttons are on the sides and are very small. You will not be able to use with gloves. I like the little joystick to the left thumb very much, but people with clumsy hands. Magellanic buttons are large, simple, and labeled.
be – Magnetic compass: Garmin identify properties of this feature. Magellanic compass works in any position. (With the motion, separate heading indicator works in any orientation on both units.)
– Battery life and accuracy: On the same for both.
– PC Cable / DC car adapter: Garmin slides on his back. Magellan difficult situation vis-a device type.
Memory – Maps: Garmin has 24 MB ready for download mapping software (sold separately). Magellan requires additional memory card…
– Owner’s Manual: Garmin provides complete instructions. Magellan does not provide a quick start guide. Fully electronic and manual is divided into two files.
– User interface: I found the Garmin software and menus are more intuitive.
result: I wanted to travel to a small unit for outdoor activities and several cars. J love the small, high-precision devices with lots of details. I kept the Garmin.
also ordered the dash Car Holder, Car DC adapter, a belt holster, MapSource MetroGuide States U.S. and CD. I am very happy with two of them.

As a business traveler I opened some very cool new technology. One of these devices are GPS devices that will appear in the rental car. The rental companies, I offer a GPS in the car that features more advanced than what you find in a pocket, but manufacturers are Magellen. In this context, I made myself go to one of my own GPS.
I need to talk do not want directions, I was in this unit to search for games. I live in the Rockies, and my wife and I explore the tracks with the weekend. A little off-road can cause hours of fun, but it can also be lost in the rush. In addition, I wanted something geocaching. (…) This was my first GPS, I would also ensure that the GPS had chosen to grow with me.
Magellen name in mind, I quickly found a variety of features here on Amazon. Comments are posted mixed, so I went for another test site for back-up. The reviews were mixed, too, and one person even suggested that Garmin pure and simple. I talked with some friends met some shops, and at the end, the Garmin eTrex series form the bill.
Vista is primarily the end of the eTrex line, and you will not be disappointed when you look the same qualities, I found myself. GPS screens go, it was substantial and clear. Although designed for left-handed (and I’m right handed), provides the full functionality Quick Stick with one hand, once you get used to. The Vista also has more memory eTrex line for you to hold more detailed maps, you must decide to buy them from Garmin. Do not get me wrong, the cards are included, quite well in their own right.
Among the main features that sold me on eTrex Vista on the other, the altimeter and compass. The altimeter is nice, especially in the Rockies, but probably not the most useful characteristic for Flatlanders. The compass is golden. If you have a GPS unit, go where you want to say that this will be an arrow that tells you in the right direction. However, the arrow only works when you are moving. If you want to stop and that is how (a), in which direction you are facing, or (b) move very slowly to have the polish your game, then the compass is an indispensable function. I can not stress enough – it is extremely accurate Geocache hunt. And
on accuracy, I find I get a lock of about 20 feet. According to the weather or the leaves can vary, but I usually max at about 50 meters. I was at the back of a taxi, sit down leading to the airport and I was able easily to the street I wanted to length, direction, speed, the driver how far we went and so on – Vista has no problem to follow.
Note that GPS signals are not from heaven, and if clouds or other obstructions in the sky, then the accuracy weaken. For a rainy day in Oregon, I was not busy.
batteries go, I found that Vista gives me about 12 hours on two AA batteries. This may vary depending on how I advanced features (WAAS, and the compass). I turn the compass, while I pursue a geocache, and if I get less than 100 feet, I turn again. Oh, and in connection with geocaching, Garmin waypoint symbols for geocachers, which can be added to your Vista available.
If the GPS is on leave during a hike that follows the TrackBack feature a shout crumbs back to a simple click of a button. I used this feature several times and you will come back spotless. For hikers or hunters with GPS in the dense foliage, it can establish a best practice point of interest in the occasional clearings. This gives you the precision, and save your battery.
first review of my wishes for a GPS, I was looking for support in the back woods, geocaching fun and save space. All functions are outside fun more fun – and safe. received in relation to geocaching, the precision of the device and the compass (gold) to the destination a breeze. And with additional memory and firmware updates (like geocaching symbols), this device will not fail to check with me for years to come. I’m curious to see how he holds the backcountry snowmobile.

Before buying my eTrex Vista, I had never owned or used a GPS unit, but I had read a considerable number of articles on GPS and before I, finally, the decision to buy, I spent several weeks reading as I could in order to find users, comments, editorials and so on! In other words, the eTrex Vista is a great portable GPS unit. It is easy to learn and operate and has the best characteristics of a device similar. It is very small and weighs only 8 or 9 ounces with batteries, but do not be fooled by the size, it is a powerful unit and works very well in the country, in deserts and on the water. He has problems in dense forests, like all other actions to hand. In open country, desert or on the water, locks on this little beauty, each time by five or six satellites. From what I know now, the only other unit I would recommend the eTrex Legend and only if you feel no need for an electronic compass and an altimeter. Personally, I love it with the electronic compass is available, and I found that I enjoy using the altimeter as well. You already know all the features of this aircraft, or would you not try to take a decision regarding the purchase, but I’ll talk about some of them. The built-in 24 MB of memory is great. We just have to download detailed mapping for a state or two or three major cities and their metropolitan area. I think the electronic compass very useful when trying to return to a crossing point, especially when walking or hiking in rural or desert region. After going back is no fun and can also be boring. Note, the electronic compass when not in use to conserve battery. I rarely, except in the case of return or attempt to find a waypoint. “Battery Life”, which is a problem that seems to answer honestly, but I will! When you turn the camera at the beginning of an excursion, hike, which rely on them and what might need if you tried a pre-selected waypoint, etc to identify and begin to leave the electronic compass, and you receive a maximum of 10-12 hours of battery life. It’s a fact! If anyone tells you different, it is BS! I know now that many other people with Vista, and this is consistent with one of them. If you are the compass until you need when you need it at all, on a certain day, you can extend the battery life to about 14 or 15 hours. If you do not start trying to find a waypoint and only turning on the device to your waypoint and can highlight a few other waypoints on the road and then turn your back as you are between 15 and, after 18 hours of battery life. But anyway, we the people are real cheap batteries, alkaline batteries quality. Hell, if you buy one super stores, you can boxes of 24 or even 48 to move. 45 cents each. It is damn cheap and they are certainly not so difficult that you can not take a half-dozen extras on your person. Two final observations. One, as already mentioned, the device works very well in open country and water, etc., but it is not suitable for use in a vehicle. Certainly it can be used in this function, but if the first line, what you use, I suggest you look for a device that is designed for this purpose. Two, I would bet that the design is left in Vista, because the so-called “Click-Stick” on the left side of the device, which can use it almost impossible with one hand, with right hand. The reason is that the thumb on the right side of the screen when you use the “Click-Stick” and you should be able to view the screen when the screen using covers “Click-Stick.” Fortunately for me, I could teach me to get handed to use with my left hand. It was weird at first, but to my surprise he did not take very long comfortable with him. As the majority of the population is far right-hander, I would say that Garmin is definitely tempered by the “Click-Stick” on the left side of the camera! Overall, I like the eTrex Vista. It is a bit expensive, but again, what is your safety and peace of mind worth? If the “Click-Stick” is on the right instead of left, I would give this unit a high rating of five stars !

I had GPS receivers for several years. I use it for hiking, cycling and car navigation systems. What could I found in the eTrex Vista is almost all the features you require in a portable GPS unit: sturdy construction (it may take a dive), a digital compass, altimeter and the ability to load additional map data detailed.
Vista also has a capacity WAAS. This means it can be a special signal from a WAAS GPS satellites designated, you get a more accurate positioning (currently enabled for North America). I can not always have the satellites, but I remember once when I did, my Vista has been given less than 8 feet! Normally, the Vista with an accuracy of 50 feet or more, depending on the conditions of the satellite. For recreational use, is that, just as I do, certainly as accurate as other GPS receivers same price range on the market.
digital map and compass work well together. On a recent increase in the growing North Carolina Table Rock Mountain A friend asked: “What is the lake there? I do not know, so I showed the lake view and turned on the digital compass in a camp to get it. Then I displayed the map page. I remembered that the card can be displayed with “north” or “Track Up”. If I the card is activated to ‘Track Up’), while not moving it (and compass, I found the card activated to steer the north (as it is a paper map). After adjusting the zoom level I could see clearly see the lake. Then I turned the map pointer on the lake its name and distance to get. “The Lake James,” I said, my friend, and he is 8 1 / 2 miles.
then they showed me the data on topographic maps, I put Garmin MapSource Topo U.S. CD-ROM was downloaded. When the car navigation, I MapSource MetroGuide data display (MapSource CD-ROMs are available separately). But even outside the area, the Vista View map useful, including state / country boundaries, lakes, rivers, coastlines, main streets and roads, and freeway exit information (gas, food, housing, etc.).
MetroGuide If you download data to add Vista to show you the little street and the street many local businesses and points of interest. Here you can address (in a metro area, you can download) and Vista, the site will find it for you. You will also find intersections and points of interest by the spelling of their name (or the beginning of a name to narrow the list, then select an item from the list). As with GPS, you can create your own points of interest, labeled (with a maximum of 10 characters), give them special symbols, and simple, they look at the latest.
MapSource CD-ROM contains a program that will charge you record and edit your waypoints and routes (the Vista itself comes with a serial interface cable). The program works with nearly all Garmin GPS, so I can save waypoints and routes from my old Garmin GPS receivers and copy it into Vista.
Vista does not respond at routing, but you can download the software, Vista is the way with your purchase, then charge. You can manually enter and edit or roads on the graphics card Vista before travel, waypoints easy or intersections, participant. The Vista can accompany you on your chosen route as you travel (a great feature to find unfamiliar roads in the dark). The Vista has a record of Nice light of the high resolution LCD screen (I always recommend the cigarette lighter adapter and car mount, car navigation, if you want).
characteristic that hunters and fishermen, as a calendar you are looking for the best time for hunting and fishing for a certain day and place is possible. There is also an animated graphic display of the sun and moon sun / moonrise time display support assembly that can be accessed from the calendar.
Garmin occasionally update the software for their GPS receivers. You can download it from the Garmin website, and then load them in Vista. I just made myself a few times.
I just have some things they should have more the Vista 24 MB of memory so you have more than three metropolitan areas to a date from the Metro guide CD ROM could download a whole. In addition, the absence of my other Garmin GPS a page “active route, which is an interesting feature on the Vista.
Otherwise, it is difficult to imagine a more personal navigation tool. Make sure you are in possession of a compass, altimeter and detailed map in the palm, which also shows where you go where you are, how it is and how long it will take to get there yourself! La Vista is great!

I used my eTrex Vista for more than 200 miles of geocaching now. I love everything regarding this product, except the compass. To be precise, the compass and direction finder, you must keep the eTrex perfectly flat. It can be very annoying, especially while walking or on a slope. And people finder is a very important feature of all GPSr – one might say, is why you get a GPSr. If I get another GPS unit, it will mark a Magellan with a 3-axis compass. You can keep them at an angle and the compass is always accurate. If you cycle a lot, use the Garmin handlebar adapter – turns your eTrex in the world’s largest bike-computer!
