   I was looking for an inexpensive device to use for several years while I wait for this very mature market. This is the answer. My use is for hiking and trekking. I have with my unit for several days, and it is amazing for a price level of $ 100. I especially like the tough exterior that is easy to grasp. The satellite lock is fast and impressive. The display features a backlight for excellent dark nights and in the house, but otherwise, the clarity is good. Much better than an eTrex. Remember, it does not allow you to install maps, if that is the case, you need a more expensive. But if you just want length, and fixed points, once you get there, it’s worth every penny.

   The controls are very easy and fast. Menus look nice and clear.

   Large LCD.

   For $ 100 dollars I can not imagine a better GPS.

   I sit down I had a model reciently Cobra 100 (the cheapest model, which makes cobra, the principle is the same as Magellan eXplorist 100, when discussing the category of the model) and I found them to be about the same price. The 100 Cobra was poor, had received very poor, but its menu – but if you GPS you do not care about menus Nice, you mean a good home! “I use my eXplorist 100 for most of the walks which means I’m usually in a wooded area. And even with my Magellan I have at least 4-7 satellites at any time in the forest canopy to complete, where the Cobra 100 had an average of two satellites to show is not even enough to where you are on the GPS ! Also, I can tell you that Magellan has each function of the Cobra 100 had 100 or more: Magellan has a sun and moon and oreintaion function instead of a green light on the Cobra 100, the Magellan two differing in brightness in a Contrast orange. I must emphasize that the most important things: The reception is 40 times better than selling Cobra 100, and is particularly suited to plot your own path, ie: hiking, camping, boating, etc. but NO mapping Highway / navigation / car! You can not link the Magellan 100 to a computer to download maps! She would like the model 300 or more I think (maybe 200?) Of course, you can make your own journey with the 100 driving in the streets and save the “Title” and set waypoints etc, but not for the background city. The Magellan 100 is everything you every need for walking, or what you do in the open air and better model based on the GPS market. If it helps you in everything I buy with my Magellan in northern Pennsylvania, where I live – not always the Cobra 100 I have a property!

   I had an Etrex. And I must say, this product is 10 times better service.

   1) the acquisition of the satellite is good.
   2) to really easy.
   and 3) very fit in the hand.

   and last but very important. Large LCD.

   I bought my eXplorist a year ago, when my eTrex eaten by a goat – I was really pictures. Anyway, I’ve never liked because I take the eTrex GPS readings mainly lon lat / decimel use degrees and it was very difficult to read the small numbers on the eTrex. The eXplorist is much better in this area and many others.

   The camera has been especially durable. I’ve been under water. If more than one occasion I also very often that I leave for me to do it on the roof of the jeep while there is an update to forget, and then go down the road. It is still perfectly runing and not even a scratch. It is a little thicker than some of the smaller units now, but it is always comfortably in your pocket and the roundness of it makes it comfortable in the pocket.

   I have the device after Europe and New Zealand was, as the United States. He has done very well everywhere. I’m not exactly in time because it is used with GPS devices over the years around the world, I know time-to-fix widely depending on the configuration of the satellite coverage, the satellites are special available, atmospheric conditions, etc. I think varies from long experience that it really is a marketing problem than actual use. My little vintage 1980 1999 MJ Trimble always matched Garmin 12 in speed, to Y2K problems, it was crazy. In short, is the average of the eXplorist is not significantly faster or slower than any other handheld device I’ve used. This unit is the satellite channel 14 (instead of 12 to give the older models), it seems a slight advantage.

   It is, I can also say that the accuracy varies considerably and that this unity as consistently as any I use in this class, and it is very likely in its class the extraordinary precision. It uses WAAS and EGNOS in the rare times when you received and it is not really provide a precision of 3m. I tested twice in the U.S. and only a few inches once. Remember that this accuracy depends on your date but do not try to navigate a minefield with this thing.

   The eXplorist has several points of reference, the map units, coordinate systems, etc. as most units. If you have a very specific, dealing with all means, what I did to go to a store to address the issue and put it with what you need. In one such unit, you buy the software to suit the material, and if you have special requirements, it would better be right or you will be wasting your money.

   It is easy to navigate menus and the thing fits in the hand. A few minutes to familiarize yourself with the controls and I was very comfortable with him. The interface is very good. One of the things that I can be more moving with the joystick, the NAV button on the screen as fast. It is the display of data, follow the satellite system, large screen, screen graphics and the compass screen. A GPS compass is completely useless for walking (which I most GPS), and use sometimes very badly misleading. I take this as another marketing strategy for most, but I see it as useful when you are surrounded by metal or high magnetic fields. A $ 5 traditional compass will always respond more quickly and reliably in the field, however, and I do not want to go on an expedition without one.

   The great thing about this device which distinguishes it from many others (especially older) is the screen. It is large and clear. The numbers are big and fat. It is also a very good contrast setting. The light is easy to activate and is red – green or yellow rather scary – which is fine if you use a telescope or other optical light sensitive.

   It works with 2 AA batteries like most small units. Battery life was great. I do not know how long I rarely change the batteries and a fourth charge seems to be sufficient for a good tour for me. I tried without the battery in it, but I think that, as in other GPS devices, you must use 1100mA +, to provide a sufficient duration. It is an indicator of battery life on the main screen, which is really useful.

   This is a great little machine. So what’s the problem? Really nothing. I love it. It is orange, but that makes it difficult to lose. In addition, sometimes small raids on the battery drops to screw on the side of the screw, it is difficult to obtain for those of us who face nail. These are really minor complaints.
