TomTom ONE 140-S Review

TomTom ONE 140-S 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Firstly, I would warn about buying this device as it has everything needful features of a GPS Navigation. I would not abandon any attributes, such as Text-to-Speech, Lane Guidance, HOV, Point of Interest, and HELP! For instance would not choose the TomTom ONE 140-S as it run short speech to text.

TomTom ONE 140-S – Check Price!

Advantages

  1. In normal rural driving, I never lost satellite signal. It uses around 30-55 seconds to search a signal on a start position, which is normal time same as other GPS, I ever used.
  2. The routing is good, and led me to the point where I tried to go. And it is able to recalculate moderately fast when I go wrong, and then report a corrected route immediately.
  3. The device is very compact and virtually suits with shirt pocket. I see this as a great travel device.
  4. You can charge this unit via computer or a USB charger – a wonderful choice if it is not used in a car.
  5. Change volume with one touch. Only click and drag, no have to click a divide OK button.
  6. The new greatest features in this device is the Demo mode. Just type your destination and then it will reproduce a drive to that point. This feature worked very well when I have to tell everyone how to go to any place.
  7. A speed limit caution beeps for you when you drive over your setting driving speed, or if they have the maximum speed for a road. Regrettably, I only get it to caution me on the throughway. Anyway, Garmin nuvi work great even through on vicinity streets.
  8. There are many security functions can be activated – for instance the warning when you are close a academy or place of worship. I’m also not sure about the usefulness of this feature, but its absolutely a amused feature.
  9. Provides wide range of colors by day and night displays. I went with the default settings that are more sufficient. In especially the views of night display is obvious and simple to read.
  10. Points of Interest are adjustable. Truly many things of this unit is user adjustable (include speed limits on roads, the road names, etc.).

Disadvantages

  1. The display of real property is very cramped. Once you factor in all the “avionics”, the map display ends up being cramped. I am favor the roomier 1440. However, I couldn’t keep the 1440 in shirt pocket.
  2. In my utilization, I usually depend on great voice reminders. The TomTom ONE 140-S can be either a “human” or a “computer” sound. This selection is an issue for me is that one voice can talk the name of roads while the other could not. It’s difficult to assume why the mechanics felt that this selection was essential, particularly since the TTS feature loses it’s worth when the name of street couldn’t be spoken. And, figure on the sound I chose, the device differed from feet (that I love) to yards (which I have to psychically convert).
  3. The device does not automatically turn on when the car is started, or turn off when the car is turned off. This is bad.
  4. Magellan Lane Assist is more instructive. At most major interchange it cautions me about driving on the right lane. The 140-S seems to happen only if it believes that there is a likelihood of misunderstanding. I need the extra advise, especially when go to an unknown city.
  5. The display screen is hard to see in the sunlight.
  6. The Point of Interest database is very imperfect. I couldn’t find a simple place such as the Best Buy or Walmart.

Conclusion

The display screen dimension is moderately miniscule when equate to other GPS. A main deciding determinant is that you evaluate higher, portability or usability. This unit conquers on portability.

TomTom Go 930 Review

TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Touchscreen Portable GPS Navigator

This unit is very good in the CFL, and many features are great. Even though the FM transmitter is not a good option in the CFL, since many number of radio stations, cable AUX option is fabulous. Routing is precise and flexible and traffic for rush hour interstate for travel is essential. Easy to travel plans and evaluation criteria for the route can be expected or choose by yourself. Update maps and application was impeccable, daily updates and Quickfix upgrades. Acquires satellites and re-routes very fast. Added card 8 GB SDHC and it is well recognized. As many people have said, it is best to add MP3 and files via card reader as this device has some quirks with the 8 Gb and higher SDHC cards. With a card adpter or reader all issues are resolved. The display screen is obvious and easy to read, but it has a bit of glitter in the direct sunlight that lowers readability somewhat; but no show-stopper. In general, TomTom Go 930 is fantastic and I would recommend to others who are interested in a feature rich and well made GPS.

Arrival Time

The time of arrival with IQROUTES is more accurate than Garmin’s. The nuvi continue updating the time pending on the road. I compared the arrival time at the beginning and the TomTom is more accurate. TomTom is invariably collecting travel times and update its database. When you log on the Home Program the IQroutes from your trip will be uploaded to the TomTom server.

Routes

If someone writes a review on the GPS and informs that the routes are 100% correct so they’re deceiving, do not have the perfect GPS with a perfect routes. Both routes TomTom 930 and nuvi 760 are selfsame. In 930 I see the remaining time of journey, and time of arrival. I also can tell 930 what time I want to get my destination. I can avoid any roads on my journey. It is not possible to avoid the road on the nuvi 760.

Traffic

I use traffic to my 930 with ATT Tilt phone and it seems work and accurate. It uses my Tilt to access the traffic on TomTom server service via the Internet. If you have cell coverage then you need traffic data. MSN Traffic on nuvi 760 is not accurate and the avoidance does not work as well. The bad about the MSN Direct feature is that it is not have good range. The service does not work in many of the distance suburbs.

Benefits

  1. IQroutes more accurate than the nuvi.
  2. Lane guidance works in most area.
  3. Can avoid roads on your travel.
  4. Able to correct street names, nearby streets, one way, and many other errors is a big benefit.
  5. GPS chip has not lost reception. It lost the signal several times in the nuvi.
  6. More information on the TomTom Go 930 screen than on the Garmin nuvi 760T.

Minus

  1. The display screen is difficult to see in the sunlight.
  2. Batteries for longer less than 1 hour.
  3. Text-to-speech does not work always. Street names are not articulated as well as the nuvi.
  4. TomTom do not have the constant reminder of the nuvi 760 offers. With 760, you can close your eyes and not miss one wheel.
  5. Cannot find the address of the city like Garmin nuvi.

TomTom ONE XL-S Review

TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom XLS is generally similar to the XL, with the exception of the computer voice for the street names. If you have another voice for directions, you will not pick the “S” function, the exact same direction as the XL version. It is not mentioned in the instructions and it took me a few days to find a solution why the British voice that I love wouldn’t give the names of the streets. In addition, the URLs on the TomTom website is not updated for the XLS, or the manual. The website they provide leads to dead-end page. Conclusion, this is still my favorite over the Garmin products, however it would be pleasant if they included a screen cover.

TomTom ONE XL-S

TomTom ONE XL-S – Check Price!

Benefits

  1. ONE XL-S finds the satellites speedily and maintains signal. The Garmin nuvi 200W took around 3 minutes nearly every time from a power-up start. The user interface is beautiful and has many more features than the Garmin.
  2. POI database (such as POI categories, it’s – it lacks some of the major U.S. retail chains) is more current than the Garmin which I bought at the same time.
  3. It also gives you QWERTY keyboard mode that Garmin 200W does not!

Minus

  1. The graphics are a little grain compared with Garmin
  2. Bluetooth is worthless, works only for data transmission/reception and even with a very limited number of phones. You can’t use it as a handsfree.
  3. If you have a wrong turn or pass on your destination or do anything to pass by your destination on a 2-lane road, it will not inform you to turn back – you will be navigated through the next set of crossroads. In rustic areas, this could mean a 20 mile journey instead of going back 200 meters.
  4. The text-to-speech works very unpredictable. Some name it speaks very nice but a terrible lack of other, so you can not understand it. Moreover it informs street names around the quarter mile before and then just say left or right when you are truly at a crossroads and want the street name change. This is irritating.
  5. There is an SD card slot. But the device works only with SD card slot or internal memory. Which means that you must load all data in the internal memory to SD card, which takes over about an hour because of the extremely slow data rate. And the internal memory is almost full so forget all the upgrades except you must have at least a 2GB or more SD card
  6. Oddly TomTom is not aware of major U.S. retailer Toys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. Even if after I update the device with U.S. Retail POI database file.
